Travel Guide
A small inhabited island in Gunsan’s outer Gogunsan Archipelago, surrounded by clear water, rugged coastal rocks and sea views. Today, Myeongdo is also one of the highlights of the Gogunsan Seomit-gil, a spectacular walking route linking five islands above the sea.
Walk across the sea
through the Gogunsan Islands
Myeongdo Island is a quiet inhabited island in Gunsan’s Gogunsan Archipelago. According to local tourism information, its name is associated with the clarity of the surrounding water, while its coast is known for unusual rock formations and tranquil West Sea scenery.
Myeongdo has also become an important stop on the Gogunsan Seomit-gil, a sea trekking route connecting Maldo, Bonongdo, Myeongdo, Gwangdaedo and Bangchukdo. Pedestrian bridges now allow travelers to continue across the islands on foot after arriving in the outer archipelago.
The Myeongdo section combines village scenery, forested slopes, exposed rock formations and dramatic bridge crossings. It works especially well for travelers who want more than a simple island stop and prefer to explore the Gogunsan coast on foot.
How to Get to
Myeongdo Island
Myeongdo Island can be reached by passenger ferry from Jangjado. Travel through Gunsan and the road-connected Gogunsan Islands to Jangjado, then board the ferry serving Myeongdo and the surrounding outer islands.
Travel to Gunsan
Head toward Gunsan and continue into the Gogunsan Archipelago. Road connections through Saemangeum allow you to reach Seonyudo and Jangjado without taking a ferry.
Continue to Jangjado
Travel by road to Jangjado and make your way to the passenger ferry landing. Allow enough time for parking, ticketing and boarding procedures.
Take the ferry to Myeongdo
Board the passenger ferry serving Myeongdo. Current schedules may vary, so confirm the latest sailing and return ferry before departure.
Gunsan → Gogunsan Islands → Jangjado → passenger ferry → Myeongdo → Gogunsan Seomit-gil → return ferry.
Plan the ferry and trekking route together
Myeongdo can be visited as a destination on its own, but it is now also part of the connected Maldo–Bonongdo–Myeongdo–Gwangdaedo–Bangchukdo walking route. If you plan to trek between islands, check ferry timing, your exit point and current trail conditions before setting out.
Best Places to Visit

Myeongdo Village
The small village around the island landing is the natural starting point for exploring Myeongdo. Fishing boats, narrow roads and low houses create a quiet outer-island atmosphere.
