Travel Guide
A quiet island on the outer edge of Gunsan’s Gogunsan Archipelago, known for a natural sea arch, layered coastal rocks and a scenic suspension bridge above the West Sea. Bangchukdo is made for travelers who enjoy walking, geology and wild island scenery.
A coastal island
shaped by wind and waves
Bangchukdo Island lies on the northwestern side of the Gogunsan Archipelago in Gunsan. Its Korean name refers to the island’s role as a natural barrier against strong winds and waves coming in from the West Sea.
The island is best known for Independence Gate Rock, a natural sea arch carved into the coast, and Book Rock, also called Rice Cake Rock, where folded rock layers create an unusual stacked appearance.
Another highlight is the Bangchukdo Suspension Bridge, an 83-meter pedestrian bridge connecting Bangchukdo with uninhabited Gwangdaedo. Forest paths, small beaches and coastal decks make this one of the most scenic walking areas among the outer Gogunsan Islands.
