Travel Guide
Sea mist, an ancient evergreen forest, pebble beaches and quiet mountain trails. Far off the coast of Boryeong, Oyeondo feels more remote than most West Sea islands and rewards travelers who stay long enough to slow down.
Where forest,
fog and sea meet
Oyeondo Island is one of the most remote islands belonging to Boryeong in Chungcheongnam-do. Its name is associated with the image of an island appearing far away through sea mist, a fitting description for a place often wrapped in fog.
The island’s best-known attraction is the Oyeondo Evergreen Forest, a protected natural monument filled with camellias and other broadleaf trees. Just beyond the forest, pebble beaches and coastal scenery create a striking contrast.
Hiking up Bonghwasan, walking through the evergreen forest, exploring the coast and watching fishing boats return to the harbor make up the classic Oyeondo experience. Because of the island’s distance from the mainland, an overnight trip is usually the better way to visit.
How to Get to
Oyeondo Island
Oyeondo Island is reached by passenger ferry from Daecheon Coastal Passenger Terminal in Boryeong. The route heads far into the West Sea, so weather and marine conditions can have a major effect on ferry operations.
Travel to Boryeong
Make your way to Boryeong on Korea’s west coast. Daecheon Port is the main departure point for travelers heading to Oyeondo.
Go to the passenger terminal
Head to Daecheon Coastal Passenger Terminal with enough time for ticketing and boarding procedures.
Take the ferry to Oyeondo
Board the ferry serving Oyeondo. Some sailings may call at other islands before reaching Oyeondo, so check the route and arrival details for your travel date.
Boryeong → Daecheon Coastal Passenger Terminal → ferry to Oyeondo → confirm return ferry → check marine weather → begin island sightseeing.
Check the latest ferry before traveling
Oyeondo lies far from the mainland, and ferry service can be affected by strong winds, waves and sea fog. Confirm the latest schedule, boarding details and return ferry for your actual travel date.
Best Places to Visit
on Oyeondo
Oyeondo combines an unusually dense evergreen forest with mountain trails, pebble beaches and dramatic rocky coast. Walking is the best way to connect them.
Oyeondo Evergreen Forest
The evergreen forest behind the village is Oyeondo’s signature attraction and a designated Natural Monument. Camellias, Machilus trees and many other broadleaf species create a dense canopy over the walking path.

Rising above the island, Bonghwasan is the main hiking destination on Oyeondo. The route passes through forested slopes before opening to views across the village and surrounding sea.
View on Google Maps →Oyeondo Pebble Beach
Beyond the evergreen forest lies one of Oyeondo’s most distinctive shores. Instead of a wide sandy beach, smooth pebbles line the coast and create a quieter, rugged atmosphere.
View on Google Maps →Maebawi Rock
Oyeondo’s coast is dotted with unusual rocky formations. Maebawi, or Hawk Rock, is one of the island’s recognizable coastal landmarks and adds drama to the sea views.

Another well-known formation along the island’s rocky coastline, Byeongpungbawi takes its name from a shape resembling a folding screen. It is best appreciated as part of Oyeondo’s coastal scenery.
View on Google Maps →Oyeondo Harbor & Village
Most of the island’s village is gathered around the harbor. Fishing boats, narrow lanes and the mountain rising behind the houses make even a simple walk through the settlement memorable.

1 Night 2 Days
Oyeondo is far enough from the mainland that an overnight itinerary makes the journey much more comfortable. Use the first day for forest and coast, then hike Bonghwasan the next morning.
If ferry times allow a day trip, focus on Oyeondo Harbor → Evergreen Forest → Pebble Beach → Bonghwasan → Harbor. Keep the route flexible and give priority to the return ferry.
Getting Around
Oyeondo
Oyeondo is compact and walking is the main way to experience the village, evergreen forest and mountain trails.
Walking & Hiking
The classic Oyeondo experience is on foot. Village lanes, forest trails and the route toward Bonghwasan can be combined into a single walking journey.
The island may look small, but many sections are hilly. Wear proper walking shoes and leave enough time for the return ferry.
Accommodation Transfer
If you are carrying heavy luggage, ask your accommodation whether pickup or local transfer can be arranged from the harbor.
Do not assume that regular taxis or frequent public transport are available on the island.
Forest-to-Coast Walk
One of the easiest ways to enjoy Oyeondo is to walk from the village through the evergreen forest toward the pebble coast.
Sea fog can arrive quickly, so stay on marked paths when visibility becomes poor.

Travel farther west,
and slow down when you arrive
Oyeondo is memorable not because it offers an endless checklist of attractions, but because each part of the island feels distinct—vertical cliffs at Dumujin, the wide open shore of Sagot and the smooth pebbles of Kongdol Beach.
Give yourself two or three nights, plan your transportation before you arrive and keep the return journey flexible. Once the ferry is booked, the rest of your Oyeondo travel itinerary can unfold at the slower pace this remote island deserves.
Beyond the sea mist,
an evergreen island appears
Oyeondo feels different from the moment the ferry leaves the inner coast of Boryeong behind. The farther you travel, the quieter the sea and island seem to become.
Walk beneath old evergreen trees, climb Bonghwasan and follow the trail toward the pebble shoreline.
For your Oyeondo Island trip, consider staying for at least one night. This is an island best experienced slowly, with enough time for both the forest and the sea.
