Travel Guide
Cross one of Korea’s most striking sea bridges and arrive at an island of murals, farming history, coastal villages and quiet beaches. Amtaedo is the gateway to central Sinan and one of the best starting points for a multi-island road trip.
The road gateway
to central Sinan
Amtaedo Island is the first major island reached after crossing the Cheonsa Bridge from Aphaedo. Since the bridge opened, travelers have been able to drive directly into Amtaedo and continue by road toward Jaeundo, Palgeumdo and Anjwado.
Amtaedo is more than a transit point. The island preserves the story of the Amtaedo Tenant Farmers’ Movement, one of the most significant rural resistance movements of Korea’s colonial era. Memorials and historic sites around the island reveal a side of Sinan that goes far beyond beaches.
For a lighter stop, the famous Gidong Samgeori Mural combines painted portraits of an elderly couple with real camellia trees growing above the wall. Add Odo Pier, Chupo Beach and the old Maehyangbi monument for a varied route through scenery, art and local history.
How to Get to
Amtaedo Island
Amtaedo Island can be reached directly by road from the mainland side. The main route crosses Aphaedo and then the Cheonsa Bridge into Amtaedo. No ferry is required for a standard sightseeing trip.
Head toward Aphaedo
From the Mokpo and mainland area, follow the road toward Aphaedo, the main land-access gateway to Sinan’s central islands.
Cross the Cheonsa Bridge
The Cheonsa Bridge connects Aphaedo and Amtaedo across the sea. Crossing it is one of the most memorable parts of the journey into central Sinan.
Begin Your Island Route
Once on Amtaedo, stop at Odo Pier and Gidong Samgeori, then continue toward the island’s historic sites and western coast.
Mainland → Aphaedo → Cheonsa Bridge → Amtaedo → Jaeundo · Palgeumdo · Anjwado
Amtaedo is the road gateway to central Sinan
A standard trip to Amtaedo does not require a ferry. From the island, you can continue by road to Jaeundo, Palgeumdo and Anjwado. Amtaedo also has ferry connections to more distant islands, so it can work as both a destination and a transport hub.
Best Places to Visit
on Amtaedo
Amtaedo combines one of Sinan’s best-known photo spots with important modern history, quiet beaches and expansive bridge views.
Gidong Samgeori Mural
One of Amtaedo’s most recognizable sights is a wall painted with the smiling faces of an elderly local couple. Real camellia trees above the wall form their playful natural hairstyles, turning a small village intersection into a memorable photo stop.

The memorial remembers the tenant farmers who fought against extremely high rents during the 1920s. It is an important stop for understanding Amtaedo’s modern history and the resistance of local farming communities.
View on Google Maps →Songgok-ri Maehyangbi
This historic stone monument records a Buddhist ritual tradition practiced in Korea’s coastal regions. Dating from the early 15th century, it is one of Amtaedo’s most distinctive cultural remains.
View on Google Maps →Chupo Beach
Chupo Beach offers a quieter side of Amtaedo, with a broad shoreline, tidal-flat scenery and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. It works especially well as a slower stop after visiting the island’s historic sites.
View on Google Maps →Odo Pier
Odo Pier sits close to the Cheonsa Bridge and is one of the best places to appreciate the scale of the bridge from below. The waterfront also offers open views across the surrounding sea and islands.

Visiting Amtaedo
Road access makes Amtaedo easy to visit, but weather, coastal conditions and onward ferry plans can still affect your itinerary.

Drive carefully on narrow village and coastal roads.
If taking an onward ferry, check the latest departure and vehicle boarding information.

then discover the story of the island.
Begin beneath the Cheonsa Bridge, stop for a photo at Gidong Samgeori, trace the history of Amtaedo’s farming communities and finish beside the quiet coast at Chupo.

A gateway island
with a story of its own
Many travelers first see Amtaedo as the island at the end of the Cheonsa Bridge, a place to pass through on the way to other parts of Sinan.
Stay a little longer, and the island begins to feel different. A village mural mixes art with living camellia trees, memorials tell the story of tenant farmers, and quiet coastal roads lead toward Chupo.
Amtaedo Island works perfectly as the beginning of a larger Sinan road trip, but its history, villages and coastline make it worth exploring as a destination in its own right.
