Travel Guide
Long sandy beaches, pine-lined shores and an easy coastal road trip. Wonsando was once reached mainly by ferry, but today you can drive directly onto the island through the Boryeong Undersea Tunnel or from Anmyeondo across Wonsan–Anmyeon Bridge.
An island you can
drive straight into
Wonsando Island is one of the largest islands in Chungcheongnam-do and sits between Boryeong and Anmyeondo. What makes it especially convenient today is that you no longer need a ferry for a typical visit from the mainland.
The Boryeong Undersea Tunnel links the Daecheon Port area directly with Wonsando, while Wonsan–Anmyeon Bridge connects the island to Anmyeondo. Together they turn Wonsando into one of Korea’s easiest islands for a self-drive trip.
Once on the island, the focus is on wide sandy beaches, pine forests, fishing villages and quiet coastal roads. Wonsando Beach is the best-known destination, but the island works equally well for a relaxed drive, camping trip or overnight stay by the sea.
How to Get to
Wonsando Island
Wonsando Island now has direct road access. From Boryeong, Route 77 passes through the Boryeong Undersea Tunnel onto the island. From the north, travelers can also reach Wonsando from Anmyeondo via Wonsan–Anmyeon Bridge.
Via Boryeong
Drive toward Daecheon Port in Boryeong and follow National Route 77 into the Boryeong Undersea Tunnel. The tunnel brings you directly onto Wonsando.
Cross beneath the sea
The Boryeong Undersea Tunnel opened in 2021 and runs for about 6.9 km, connecting the mainland near Daecheon Port with Wonsando.
Via Anmyeondo
Travelers coming from Taean can drive south through Anmyeondo and cross Wonsan–Anmyeon Bridge directly onto Wonsando.
Boryeong → Boryeong Undersea Tunnel → Wonsando → Wonsan–Anmyeon Bridge → Anmyeondo
No ferry required for normal road access
Wonsando is now connected to both Boryeong and Anmyeondo by road. This makes it easy to combine Wonsando with Daecheon, Yeongmok Port and Anmyeondo in a single driving itinerary.
